Though written in 1959, Ryan's book is considered the definitive work on D Day. It is not about the two years-long planning of the operation or what occurred afterward. Ryan's book encampasses a few months before the invasion and specifically the 24 hours of the invasion itself. He interviewed over 100 participants on both the Allied and German sides as well as French citizens who resided in Normandy, some of whom were with the French resistance. He writes like a correspondent: tersely and concisely. He includes maps, photographs and footnotes. The author is unsparing in his account of the brutality, dismemberments and deaths. The reader gets to know the backgrounds of many combatants of different ranks and nationalities and learns their fates. Ryan highlights the costly mistakes made on both sides. But what excited this reviewer most were the minute details: who coined the phrase "the longest day", why did London Telegraph crosswords catch the eye of MI5 in May and June of 1944, what was the mission of two mini-subs off the coast of Normandy, what role did the weather play, and what lines from whose poem launched the invasion? Mostly, this book is about loyalty, courage and heroism. For these reasons especailly, it is a timeless classic.
